Reading Kurzweil 3000 provides access to virtually any document or publication, whether printed or electronically downloaded (including PDF files!). Kurzweil’s fast and reliable OCR (optical character recognition) software is built in, allowing you to scan books, newspapers, magazine articles and pre-printed tests with incredible accuracy. It then reads the words aloud to the student in humanlike speech–clearly and naturally–to increase student comprehension and sustain attention. Kurzweil’s 3000’s proprietary dual highlighting employs a multi-sensory approach to improving students’ reading performance by highlighting a sentence, paragraph, line or phrase in one color, and highlighting each word in another color as it is read aloud.

Writing
As a student types, the software speaks each letter, word and/or sentence, so they can
quickly recognize and correct spelling mistakes. The audible spell checker and word predictor
further assists students in creating and modifying reports, essays, papers and tests without teacher
intervention.

Multilingual Assistance With audible dictionary definitions available in English, French, German, Spanish or Italian, and the ability to read text in any of these languages, users can master the material of their choice in the language they are learning.

Study Skills Students improve their reading comprehension and retention with tools that facilitate active reading, including bookmarks, highlighting, annotations, sticky notes, voice notes and extraction of scanned text or personal notes. Vocabulary lists and study guides can be created. Students also have access to a talking dictionary that will provide definitions in both written and auditory formats. With the same tools, teachers can personalize instruction to suit different student needs and learning styles.

Web Access
When used with MS Internet Explorer, Kurzweil 3000’s Read the Web capability enables audible
and visual access to web pages, opening up the limitless resources of the Internet to special
needs students.

Test Taking Kurzweil 3000 allows for the completion of worksheets, quizzes, classroom exams or standardized tests with greater confidence, fewer mistakes and increased independence. Students can seamlessly answer fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, true/false, short answer and other test forms while using a customized selection of writing tools, comprehension aids and visual modifications. Teachers can also disable certain features, such as the dictionary and spellcheck, which might give students with accommodations an unfair advantage during test taking. also now offers the ability to encrypt certain documents to allow for increased security.
